A Software Tutorial Belongs on California’s NextGen Preparation Checklist

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: 2026 transition notice

Find the official interface preview

California’s NextGen adoption notice links to a preview of the official examination software. That gives future applicants a more direct way to understand the interface than screenshots from a preparation course. The notice concerns the examination beginning in July 2028, not the Examplify setup for February 2027.

Learn navigation separately from law

Our suggestion is to make an initial tutorial session about mechanics. Locate the question, source materials, answer area, and available navigation. Then repeat the exercise while paying attention to your reading and writing process. Separating these goals can reveal whether a difficulty comes from the legal task or from finding the right screen.

Avoid assumptions about transfer

Typing quickly in a familiar word processor does not demonstrate comfort with a secure testing interface. Likewise, an online practice simulator is a separate product unless specifically identified as the official platform. Use the tutorial to identify which habits need adjustment, then return to substantive practice with that information. Before your eventual administration, revisit official technical requirements and setup instructions; a preview available today may change. The practical aim is to reduce avoidable uncertainty, not to predict software features or promise that a tutorial eliminates test-day problems.
