Family Law Enters NextGen’s Foundational Content in July 2028

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: Applies beginning July 2028

Use the right version of the scope

NCBE’s family-law outline identifies July 2028 as the first administration including family law in NextGen’s foundational concepts and principles. That timing matters to California applicants planning for the state’s NextGen transition. The outline also distinguishes topics and expectations rather than simply announcing a broad subject label.

Turn a scope document into a study map

Our suggestion is to organize the official outline into a checklist you can explain in your own words. Separate recognition of an issue from the ability to state a rule and apply it to a problem. Review the outline’s symbols and instructions before assuming every topic requires identical recall. An older national-exam checklist may not match the applicable version.

Keep source law and exam scope distinct

A subject outline describes what may be assessed; it does not resolve every jurisdiction’s substantive-law differences. When practicing with supplied legal resources, read those resources instead of replacing them with a remembered rule from another setting. For planning purposes, identify your exam date first and use the official scope for that administration. This is a transition explainer, not a prediction that a particular family-law issue will appear on a California exam.
