NCBE’s Constructed-Response Guide Explains NextGen Written Tasks

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: 2026 preparation resource

What the guide covers

NCBE’s constructed-response guide describes integrated question sets, performance tasks, the digital interface, and grading concepts. It is a resource for understanding written work on NextGen, which California is preparing to adopt in July 2028. The guide should be read alongside the materials for the particular administration.

Practice the requested response

Our writing suggestion is to begin by identifying the actual assignment. A concise response to a narrow question should not automatically become a traditional full essay. Conversely, a drafting task needs attention to the requested audience, form, and purpose. Before writing, make a one-sentence description of what the task asks you to produce.

Review with a specific lens

After completing an official sample, examine whether each paragraph serves the assignment. Mark facts that changed the analysis, authorities that controlled the answer, and material you included without a clear purpose. Then choose one revision goal. Familiarity with a guide is different from executing a task under time, so combine reading with active practice. Bar Exam Doctor’s current writing exercises can develop general organization and analysis skills, but they are not the official NextGen platform or a claim of identical grading.
