2028 Olympics Affect California Bar Exam Site Planning

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: 2026 notice for July 2028

A future logistics issue

The State Bar says the July 2028 California bar exam will not be held in the greater Los Angeles area because of the Summer Olympics. Its tentative site information includes Ontario, Oakland, and Roseville. Ontario access is expected to be restricted by applicants’ addresses; the qualifying ZIP codes or counties were not yet published in the notice reviewed.

Do not book from a tentative list

A tentative venue list is useful for budgeting, but it is not a personal assignment. Applicants should wait for the relevant instructions and confirm restrictions before making commitments they cannot change. Do not apply the July 2028 notice to February 2027 or assume every Southern California resident will be eligible for the same site.

Build flexibility into the plan

Our suggestion is to separate an estimated travel budget from confirmed reservations. Identify possible transport routes, work leave, childcare, and accessible lodging needs early. Keep a note of cancellation terms if you make any provisional booking. Revisit the official notice when the address restrictions and accommodation sites are clarified. This article concerns a future administration affected by a major local event; the current test-location guide remains the place to start for the nearer exam.
