California Confirms NextGen UBE Adoption Beginning July 2028

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: July 15, 2026

The confirmed transition

The State Bar’s July 15 notice announces California’s move to NCBE’s NextGen Uniform Bar Exam beginning with July 2028. It identifies in-person, computer-based administration. This is a future transition; it does not turn the February 2027 California examination into NextGen.

Start with the exam you will actually take

Our preparation advice is to write your intended jurisdiction and administration at the top of your study plan. Then verify the matching scope, format, and official materials. Someone taking the current exam soon has a different immediate task from a student planning for 2028. Mixing resources without that distinction can consume study time without answering the right questions.

What to monitor next

Keep a short change log rather than repeatedly rebuilding your plan around headlines. Record what has been adopted, what is still proposed, and the date a detail applies. Evaluate preparation products by the exam and administration they support. Do not assume that experience with an older simulator means familiarity with the official NextGen interface. Use the official tutorial and sample materials when preparing for that format. Our separate transition guide provides broader context; this news article records the adoption announcement and its practical planning implications.
