California’s Future State-Law Component Remains a Proposal in Development

By Bar Exam Doctor · Source event / applicable period: 2026 transition planning

Separate the two developments

The State Bar’s notices distinguish NextGen adoption from the California component being developed for the Supreme Court. The current page says the component would be administered no earlier than July 2029, with preliminary recommendations to be transmitted in February 2027. A planning recommendation is not the same as a complete final examination specification.

Read proposals carefully

When following this story, identify who made the decision and whether further court action is required. A committee discussion, stakeholder forum, recommendation, and adopted rule represent different stages. Avoid treating an anticipated date as a guarantee that every detail of format, scoring, or eligibility has been settled.

A practical watchlist

Our suggestion is to track the question that affects you: whether a component applies to your administration, what the eventual content scope says, and whether a separate applicant category has different requirements. Save the official notice with its review date. Do not spend preparation time memorizing an unofficial prediction of the new component. If your exam is earlier, stay focused on the currently applicable instructions. We will distinguish confirmed decisions from proposals when reporting later developments; check the linked official notice for the latest status.
