Using Free California Bar Exam Questions and Selected Answers

Bar Exam Doctor · Published November 2, 2026 · Expanded with a worked example November 2, 2026

The State Bar of California publishes past exam materials that can support a structured writing routine. Use the official collection to obtain the question and compare answers, while keeping the question's date, law, and timing in view.

When to use this guide: Use this guide for a workflow built around the official free question collection. For comparing your finished response with another writer's reasoning, use the selected-answer comparison guide.

Start with the complete assignment

Obtain the question and, for a PT, the complete task materials from the official collection. Read the instructions before starting. Older materials may reflect a different format or time allowance; label a historical learning exercise separately from a current-format simulation.

Write before reading the selected answer

Reading a response first changes the exercise from independent problem solving to guided study. That can be useful if it is intentional, but it should not be mistaken for an unaided attempt. Preserve your first answer so the comparison reveals your own decisions.

Review beyond matching headings

Compare issue coverage, use of facts, rule qualifications, and organization. Verify substantive law with current materials when appropriate. Selected answers are examples rather than individualized comments on your work. If you need help diagnosing a recurring weakness, separate that need from access to free questions.

Worked example

A free-materials practice session with honest conditions

A student downloads a historical question and immediately reads the selected answers before drafting. The resulting response is strong but heavily influenced by the reference material.

Starting approach

Record the attempt as an independent timed answer and use it to predict readiness.

A stronger approach

Label it as guided learning. For an independent attempt, choose an unfamiliar question, obtain the complete materials, record the instructions and time allowance, and write before opening the selected answers. Save the first response and make a self-review before comparison.

Why the change matters

Both guided learning and independent practice can be useful when their purposes are clear. Historical material also needs context: law, timing, and format may differ from the administration you will take. Check the official current instructions separately. Access to free questions and selected answers is not the same service as personalized diagnosis of a particular response.

Common mistake: Do not mistake familiarity gained from reading an answer for unaided issue recognition.

Try this in your next session

Download one official past question. Write under clearly recorded conditions, make a self-review, and only then compare the selected answers. Record one transferable lesson rather than copying the response.
