How Long Should a Bar Exam Essay Answer Be?

Bar Exam Doctor · Published November 2, 2026 · Expanded with a worked example November 2, 2026

Word count is a weak substitute for evaluating whether an answer covers the requested issues and explains the relevant facts. A longer answer may contain stronger analysis, but it may also contain repetition, irrelevant law, or a copied narrative.

Evaluate coverage before length

List the requested questions and the issues the facts support. Check whether your answer resolves them. A short response that omits an important defense needs expansion; a long response that never addresses it needs restructuring, not another page of background rules.

Distinguish analysis from volume

Underline sentences that connect a particular fact to a legal requirement. Then identify passages that only repeat the question or an earlier rule. This shows whether additional words are buying useful reasoning. Compare selected answers for their analytical choices rather than using their length as a minimum target.

Develop sustainable writing speed

Measure whether you can complete the assigned work within the applicable time. If typing limits completion, use short practice passages and efficient headings while continuing substantive practice. Do not chase a universal word target that forces hurried conclusions or unnecessary material.

Worked example

Compare two passages by function, not size

Answer A spends a long paragraph retelling the chronology and ends with ‘the requirement is met.’ Answer B briefly states the relevant requirement, compares two conflicting facts, explains their significance, and gives a reasoned conclusion.

Starting approach

Assume Answer A is stronger because it contains more words.

A stronger approach

Mark which sentences in each answer identify an issue, state a useful rule, explain facts, address uncertainty, or conclude. If most of Answer A only repeats the question, its additional length does not solve the missing analysis.

Why the change matters

This exercise is not a rule that shorter answers are better. Answer B could still omit another requested issue, and Answer A may need additional analysis after the repetition is removed. Evaluate completeness first, then the usefulness of each passage. Use a full timed response to check whether the level of explanation is sustainable.

Common mistake: A target word count cannot tell you whether you answered the actual question.

Try this in your next session

Cut ten percent from a completed essay without removing an issue, a material fact, or a necessary explanation. If that is easy, focus on precision. If the answer is already skeletal, add reasoning rather than filler.
