IRAC is useful when it helps a reader follow your reasoning. It becomes a problem when you treat it as four labels to fill with memorized language. Build each paragraph around a disputed requirement and the facts that make it disputed.
When to use this guide: Use this guide to build a single issue paragraph. For identifying issues before drafting, use the issue-spotting drill; for repairing an unexplained conclusion, use the conclusory-analysis guide.
Start with a narrow question
Instead of opening every paragraph with an entire subject, name the particular requirement you are deciding. A heading such as ‘Notice’ is more useful than a second heading that simply repeats ‘Liability.’ Then state the controlling rule in language you can explain. Match the rule to the jurisdiction and date of the practice question.
Spend the space on application
After the rule, identify a specific fact, explain why it supports or undermines the requirement, and address a competing interpretation if the record supports one. A conclusion cannot replace that explanation. You do not need a separate sentence announcing each IRAC letter. Readability and complete reasoning matter more than a rigid template.
Use a short conclusion
End with the likely result for that requirement. If a factual ambiguity matters, say what would change the outcome. Avoid a long recap of the facts you have just analyzed. A concise conclusion also creates a clear transition to the next issue.
Worked example
Worked example: one paragraph, one requirement
For this writing exercise, assume a fictional rule requires a notice to reach the recipient before Friday. The record says the sender transmitted it Thursday, but the recipient's inbox log records delivery Saturday. The exercise supplies its own rule; it is not a statement of actual notice law.
Starting approach
The sender gave timely notice because it was sent Thursday. Therefore, the requirement is satisfied.
A stronger approach
The issue is whether the notice reached the recipient before Friday. Although transmission occurred Thursday, the inbox log records delivery Saturday. Under the supplied receipt-based rule, the earlier transmission does not by itself establish timely receipt. Unless another fact establishes earlier receipt, this requirement is not met.
Why the change matters
The revision identifies the precise requirement, applies the fact that measures it, addresses the apparently favorable fact, and gives a qualified conclusion. Those functions make the paragraph complete; printing the letters I, R, A, and C would not repair the original unsupported inference.
Common mistake: Do not import a familiar rule about sending notices when the exercise expressly gives you a different standard.

Try this in your next session
Choose one paragraph from a completed essay. Mark the issue, rule, facts, reasoning, and conclusion in different colors. Rewrite the paragraph if the reasoning consists only of ‘therefore’ or ‘clearly.’
