A report about the profession
The State Bar’s October 15 diversity announcement discusses the active profession and roughly 7,000 newly admitted attorneys. It reports women at 58% and people of color at 60% of the newly admitted cohort. It also describes continuing disparities in workplace experience. These figures concern admission and the profession, not a July-exam passing percentage.
Keep the denominator visible
A newly admitted cohort is different from everyone who took an exam or everyone who graduated from law school. It can reflect multiple examination administrations and completion of other admission steps. Avoid using the report as proof of a specific school’s pass rate or as a comparison of preparation providers.
From entry to professional support
Our suggestion for applicants is to plan beyond examination day. Identify mentors, career resources, and people who can help you navigate the transition into practice. For schools and employers, the report is a starting point for questions about access and support rather than an explanation of an individual’s outcome. Read the report’s definitions and survey context before quoting statistics. This article highlights an October 2026 development in the broader admissions story; it does not claim that passing the examination alone eliminates barriers in the profession.
