How to Review a Completed Performance Test

Bar Exam Doctor · Published November 2, 2026 · Expanded with a worked example November 2, 2026

Finishing a PT is the beginning of the review cycle. A useful review identifies whether the main problem was understanding the assignment, extracting the law, using the facts, organizing the document, or completing it on time.

When to use this guide: Use this guide for the whole-response review after completing a PT. For improving the next attempt's reading-to-drafting schedule, use the separate timing guide.

Review the assignment before the prose

Compare the response with the task memo. Check the document type, audience, questions, and exclusions. A response can be fluent yet miss a required subpart. Fixing that problem requires a different habit from improving sentence clarity.

Audit one issue closely

Trace the rule to the library, verify important qualifications, and compare the client's facts with the authorities. Identify where the answer summarizes instead of analyzes. Use a selected answer as a comparison for reasoning choices rather than as a script to copy.

Choose a transferable repair

Turn the review into one action for the next packet: build a task checklist, record contrary facts, synthesize sources under issues, or begin drafting earlier. Rewrite a short section, then test the repair on a new PT. Familiarity with the old packet alone does not demonstrate transfer.

Worked example

Diagnose the cause before choosing another packet

A completed practice response uses the correct document format and identifies the right standard, but never discusses a contrary record document. The writer's first reaction is to read more library cases.

Starting approach

Schedule additional legal reading because the PT score was disappointing.

A stronger approach

Classify the main weakness as factual use, then ask why the document disappeared. Was it missed while reading, omitted from the outline, or sacrificed when time ran short? Use the answer to select a source-reading drill, an issue chart, or a timing repair.

Why the change matters

The same omission can have different causes. Rewrite the affected section with the contrary fact, then try a new packet to test whether the repair transfers. Keep task compliance, law extraction, factual analysis, organization, and timing as separate review questions so one broad score does not hide the useful diagnosis.

Common mistake: Do not assume every disappointing PT needs the same remedy.

Try this in your next session

Assign each major weakness one label: task, law, facts, organization, or timing. Choose the most consequential label and write a one-sentence instruction to yourself for the next PT.

Your practice checklist
