Single-subject practice helps you work on a particular weakness. Mixed practice tests whether you can recognize which framework to use when the subject is not announced in advance. A useful plan gives both methods a purpose.
Use focused work to repair a gap
If you do not understand a rule, repeatedly switching subjects may hide the need for basic review. Study the concept, retrieve it without notes, and apply it to a short problem. Then check whether the repair survives when other issues compete for attention.
Mix to test recognition
Choose questions that require you to identify the subject and applicable approach. Avoid reading the subject label before an issue-spotting exercise when that would give away the task. Keep the conditions consistent enough that you can interpret the result.
Review the switching errors
After mixed work, identify whether mistakes came from weak knowledge, choosing the wrong framework, or moving too slowly between tasks. Use that diagnosis to select the next focused session. Random variety without review is not a complete strategy.
Worked example
Distinguish recognition errors from rule errors
During a mixed set, a student misses two problems. In one, the student selects the wrong framework. In the other, the student identifies the right framework but omits a qualification.
Starting approach
Treat both misses as evidence that all subjects need equal additional rereading.
A stronger approach
For the first, practice identifying the triggering fact without a subject label. For the second, retrieve and verify the missing qualification, then apply it. Return both skills to a mixed set after focused repair.
Why the change matters
Mixed practice reveals whether you can choose among approaches. Focused practice can then repair the particular gap it exposed. Neither method needs to displace the other completely. Keep the set conditions visible: prior familiarity and labels can make recognition easier than it would be on a new question.
Common mistake: Do not keep increasing variety when the problem is a concept you have not yet understood.

Try this in your next session
Complete a small mixed set or outline several unlabeled essays. For each miss, state whether you failed to recognize the issue or recognized it but could not apply the rule.
